How to support your body as activity increases this spring | With Charlotte Foley

Meet Charlotte;

From Herts Health Physio, Charlotte is one of our in-house Physiotherapists who specialises in neurological and musculoskeletal rehabilitation.

Charlotte has a particular expertise in running and neurological conditions and is passionate about helping clients reach their activity goals.

What should people be mindful of when increasing activity?

It is important to remember that the body needs time to adapt to new exercise, so listen to your body and build up your activity over time.

How can we support our bodies during this seasonal shift?

Stay well hydrated and use the longer days to set new goals for your health. It becomes easier to start adding in evening strolls.

Simple morning movements

Shoulder rolls, calf raises, foot rocks, and marching on the spot.

Are there any movements to avoid first thing in the morning?

Remember that the body can need time to warm up, so attempting to push into a stretch may become problematic.

How can we make walks more beneficial?

Walking is a great way to exercise and has many benefits both physically and mentally. To make a walk more challenging, think about increasing the pace so that you have to breathe a little heavier, or consider walking uphill to build strength in your legs.

Common habits that can lead to imbalance

The body is very good at compensating, which can lead to imbalances throughout the body. Take note if you have had an ankle injury or even a bunion — does this affect the way you walk? Do you take a larger stride with one foot compared to the other?

How does physiotherapy compliment other activities such as yoga, pilates and barre?

Some physiotherapists have undertaken Pilates and/or yoga training, as they find great use in the different poses and exercises within individualised treatment programmes.

When should someone seek physio support?

Physio support does not need to be only for those who are struggling with pain or injury. It can be useful to be assessed if you are looking to participate in a new activity, such as getting into running. A physiotherapist may be able to give you guidance on appropriate strength exercises to support any discrepancies seen on assessment. We can also provide education and management techniques to help you get the most out of your activity.

You can find Charlotte at The Oak House Friday mornings 9:30-1:30
